From his early days as a youth, among the salt-water flats of his native Florida coast, to the banks of the Saint Johns River, he found his friends among the shark, dolphin and alligator. The cry of the osprey echoes in his creative mind and images of gold and turquoise, beneath the silent surface, fill his palette. Barry Barnett's art is distinctive, with vivid colors and detailed images, within a background which adds depth and dimension, creating a sense of being able to "reach in and touch" or become a part of the subject or scene depicted.
Mr. Barnett's creative interests are reflected in original paintings, limited edition prints and sculpture. The splash of marlin fin, the silent wing of eagles, the movement of muscle under fur of wolves and lion are captured in bronze or stroke of brush. All move through the myriad of styles, to present natures wonders in color and form. But the artist's signature is etched deep in his first love
the sea.
Barry Barnett is an artist of international note. His works hang in private, commercial and institutional collections in over 28 countries. With his works a part of the United States Senate Collection in Washington, D.C. and the Florida House of Representatives in Tallahassee, Mr. Barnett's contributions toward humanitarian and environmental concerns have been recognized by state, national and international leaders on the highest levels.
In 1990, he was given recognition from the floor of the Florida House of Representatives. During that legislative session, Florida's governor Bob Martinez and the full cabinet applied their signatures to Mr. Barnett's fine art reproductions, in support of the Florida Parks Division. Since then, over 35 celebrities, including Former President Bush, have also added their signatures to the artist's, to provide a revenue source for good cause issues. Actors, athletes, news and sports commentators, clerics, military and government officials have recognized the need to support issues of interest to Mr. Barnett. During this same period, original and fine art reproductions were also presented to the Foundation for Social Invention, Moscow, in the former USSR. His work continues internationally, with the donations of his fine art reproductions to over 200 charities in Canada alone. By combining Mr. Barnett's art with the positive efforts of those who work hard to make a difference, results are being achieved.
His interest in support of United States military families and those of other counties has taken him to the high Arctic as a guest of the 2nd Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in a Canadian sovereignty operation. He has also participated in foot patrols with the Royal Canadian Regiment in the killing fields of Bosnia. Mr. Barnett is an honorary Cannon Cocker, U.S. Artillery, and an honorary gunner in the 2nd. Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He is also an honorary submariner, courtesy of the U.S. Navy. During 1996, he was guest of honor at a regimental dinner, hosted by the 16th Royal Logistic Corp, Oxfordshire, England. During that visit to the UK, he was given a private tour of Parliament and allowed to attend the House of Commons and the House of Lords, while in session. In 1990, the British Royal Navy received Mr. Barnett's remarqued print, titled "Cannon Patch", aboard HMS Birmingham. This gift of friendship symbolically returned a 17th century British frigate to Portsmouth, England, from its resting-place beneath the silent surface of the Florida Keys. With work in the interest of the U.S. Navy families, aboard the Guided Missile Cruiser USS Philippine Seas and the Trident Submarine USS Nebraska, Mr. Barnett's most recent contribution may be viewed in the lobby of NAS Hospital, Jacksonville. The courtesy extended to Mr. Barnett has given him front line experience and a working knowledge of humanitarian issues.
Mr. Barnett has contributed his works to benefit medical research and patient care. With a history of support to Mariners Hospital in the Florida Keys and medical facilities elsewhere, including his most recent donation of over $200,000.00 in fine art reproductions to Florida Health Clinics, the tradition of helping continues. With new endeavors now being selected, Mr. Barnett has also donated an original to Flagler Hospital and supports this hospital and others in the interest of indigent health care. The list is much longer then those shared and the tradition of care continues.
