ROFFS™ FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS
FOR THE FREEPORT/LUCAYA AREA (LAT./LONG. ONLY)
SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***
Based on a multiple factor analysis, the symbols (hot spot spots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action is expected to be better compared with other (non-marked) areas. These are not based on dock rumors or hearsay fishing reports. Fishing reports are stated as such. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map, search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur. Arrows indicate the main current direction. Numbers inside of the dots indicate the number of consecutive days that we have seen favorable conditions in that location.
Again today we did observe some cloud cover in this area throughout the day; however, we were able to see the ocean conditions in this area relatively clearly using a combination of satellite imagery from this afternoon and earlier this morning. The estimated morning sst° of the main body of the Gulf Stream is 76.5°F-76.9°F and this feature continues to occur over the western portion of the chart area just as we have observed it all week. We continue to follow the counter-clockwise circulation of the eddy centered in the area of the Tuna Canyon (south of Grand Bahama Island) centered near 78°37’W & 26°12’N. Today, this eddy does appear have moved slightly to the southwest and is now egg shaped and not circular as we had observed it earlier. This eddy continues to control the ocean circulation in the Northwest Providence Channel and continues to pull two large Gulf Stream filaments (76.7°F) east/southeastward over the Four Tops area and then east and northwestward along the southern and eastern sides of the eddy towards the southern coast of Grand Bahama Island. Today, we continue to observe the circulation of the new smaller counter-clockwise eddy northeast of the Tuna Canyon that was centered near 78°16’W & 26°20’N today. Although the boundary over the southeast side of the Tuna Canyon appears to have blended with the surrounding waters, we suggest you fish the areas where the ocean conditions have remained favorable for three to seven days now where good chances for marlin action occur from the cooler (74.6°F-75.5°F) water from 78°24’W & 26°15’N to 78°22’W & 26°08’N. If fishing action is not satisfactory in these areas, some additional chances for action may also happen eastward over the 1000 fathom curve, particularly where the ocean conditions have remained favorable for two days now near 78°14’W & 26°13’N and 78°10’W & 26°11-12’N and also for four days towards the Gorda Cay area near 77°49’W & 26°07’N. On your way offshore to fish the areas associated with the offshore eddy, some increased chances for tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and marlin action occur where the tip of the warmer (76.7°F) Gulf Stream water now appears to be hitting the 10-100 fathom ledge just offshore of the southern coast of Grand Bahama Island near 78°31-32’W & 26°32-33’N and 78°28’W & 26°33-34’N with relatively better chances for action occurring east/southeastward where the ocean conditions have remained favorable for three days now over the 547 fathom curve near 78°16’W & 26°32-33’N and 78°02’W & 26°26’N. Towards the Bimini area, good chances for forming concentrations of bait and also larger fish occur where the southern edge of the dark blue (76.7°F) Gulf Stream water meets the relatively cooler (75.5°F-74.3°F) water over the 100 fathom ledge northeast of the Ginger Bread Grounds, particularly where the ocean conditions have remained favorable for two days now near 78°52’W & 26°00’N.
West of Grand Bahama Island good chances for action may also happen where we observed the eastern edge of the dark blue (76.9°F) Gulf Stream water for two days now from the eastern portion of the Tuna City near 78°57’W & 26°29’N northward to the 10-100 fathom ledge in the Settlement Point area near 79°01’W & 26°41’N with some additional chances for action occurring northward between the area of Saudy Cay and the northwest of the Memory Rock from 79°05’W & 26°48-49’N to 79811’W & 27°05-06’N. North of the Little Bahama Bank towards the Matanilla Reef/Walker’s Cay areas good chances for tuna, dolphin, wahoo, and marlin action occur where we have observed the southern edge of the dark blue (77.5°F) Gulf Stream water pushing up against the 10-100 fathom ledge for three and four days respectively now near 78°45’W & 27°24’N and 78°30-31’W & 27°20-21’N.
South of the Berry Islands, clouds obscured our view today in the Pocket area. However, eastward we continue to follow the counter-clockwise circulation of the small eddy centered near 77°28’W & 25°40’N creating favorable conditions where we have observed stable ocean conditions for four and five days respectively over the 1000 fathom curve and good bottom topography near 77°33’W & 25°40’N and 77°30’W & 25°45’N.
Please remember to call us while fishing (between 10:30 AM and NOON) so we can provide a free verbal update. Thank you for not sharing this analysis with non-paying fishermen. We survive on your honesty. SPRING office hours (Starting APRIL 1st): Mon-Fri 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM. Sometimes later during tournaments. NO Saturday hours.
