ROFFS FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS FOR THE GEORGETOWN TO CAPE FEAR OFFSHORE (LAT./LONG.)

Based on a multiple factor analysis, the symbols (hot spot spots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action is expected to be better compared with other (non-marked) areas. These are not based on dock rumors or hearsay fishing reports. Fishing reports are stated as such. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map,  search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur. Arrows indicate the main current direction. Numbers inside of the dots indicate the number of consecutive days that we have seen favorable conditions in that location.

We have been able to observe the ocean conditions clearly today using imagery from late this afternoon. The estimated morning sst° of the main body of the Gulf Stream is 75.0°F. Overall, we are able to observe a large Gulf Stream eddy, centered near 77°50’W & 32°10’N, that is turning counter clockwise motion pulling the majority of the water in an offshore direction east of Georgetown. As this eddy continues to turn overnight, it will pull a finger of blue 71.5°F water inshore and southward over the 20 fathom curve improving your chances for fishing action with tuna, dolphin, wahoo, and billfish. Offshore of Cape Fear, the eddy has pushed the western edge of the main body of the Gulf Stream (75.0°F) inshore over the 50-100 fathom ledge improving your chances for fishing action.

CAPE FEAR: With this in mind, the ocean conditions suggest good chances for fishing action will occur along the western edge of the main body of the Gulf Stream (75.0°F) where it has remained stable for the past 3 days over the 50-100 fathom ledge from the Steeples near 32°32’W & 33°02’N northward to 77°00’W & 33°25’N. Closer inshore the ocean conditions suggest increased chances for fishing action will occur along the inshore edge of the finger of blue 71.5°F water where it lies over the good bottom at the 20 fathom curve near 77°18’W & 33°19’N, 77°31’W & 33°16’N, and from near 77°42’W & 33°12’N to 78°00’W & 33°06’N.

GEORGETOWN: The ocean conditions suggest good chances for fishing action will occur along the inshore edge of the finger of blue 71.5°F water as it continues to get pulled inshore over the 50 fathom curve for the past two days from near 78°30’W & 32°39’N to over Winyah Scarp near 78°24’W & 32°46’N. Additional chances for fishing action will occur further offshore along the warmer to cooler 71.5°F-69.3°F edge of the eddy where it lies over the 50 fathom curve near 78°10’W & 32°53’N, and over the 100 fathom curve near the Sanctuary near 78°15’W & 32°40’N.
