ROFFS FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS
FOR THE NEW YORK BIGHT WEST OFFSHORE AREA (LAT./LONG.)
SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***
Based on a multiple factor analysis, the symbols (hot spot spots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action is expected to be better compared with other (non-marked) areas. These are not based on dock rumors or hearsay fishing reports. Fishing reports are stated as such. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map,  search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur. Arrows indicate the main current direction. Numbers inside of the dots indicate the number of consecutive days that we have seen favorable conditions in that location.

We are able to observe the ocean conditions relatively clearly in this area today using imagery from this morning and early this afternoon. Please keep in mind that afternoon heating may occur and the temperatures we are showing may be 1-2°F cooler than the actual temperatures. Overall, we continue to observe a large clockwise rotation of a pool of blue green 78.1°F-79.1°F water centered offshore of Shinnecock Inlet near 72°30’W & 40°10’N, that is pushing the northern edge of the blue green water (77.2°F-78.1°F) inshore over 20 fathoms along the Long Island coast providing increased chances for fishing action where it meets the cooler green 71.5°F-75.1°F coastal water over good bottom, especially where favorable conditions have remained for multiple days. As you continue westward toward Fire Island Inlet, the cooler inshore water is moving in an offshore direction to over the Mud and Glory Holes. Offshore motion of the water suggests slow and scattered fishing action will occur. The clockwise rotation of the blue green water offshore of Shinnecock Inlet is also pulling warmer green 80.1°F-81.1°F water northward along the coastline of New Jersey providing scattered chances for fishing action where it forms boundaries over good bottom areas. Further offshore, a large finger of blue 81.3°F water is moving northeastward over the Hudson Canyon providing good chances for tuna, dolphin, and billfish action where favorable conditions have remained for multiple days.

With this in mind, the ocean conditions south of Long Island suggest good chances for fishing action with tuna and sharks will occur along the green to blue green 75.1°F-77.2°F boundary zone where favorable conditions have remained stable for 2-3 days over the 25 fathom curve from near 72°37’W & 40°38’N westward to near 72°42’W & 40°37’N to near 72°53’W & 40°32’N. Offshore of Fire Island Inlet, good chance for action will also occur where favorable conditions have remained for the past 2-3 days over the Cholera Bank near 73°30’W & 40°25’N, and over the Gun Boat near 73°14’W & 40°23’N. As you continue offshore, good chances for action will occur along the leading edge of the cooler 77.2°F water as it moves offshore over the Mud Hole and Glory Hole where favorable conditions have remained for 2-3 days near 73°24’W & 40°02’N and 73°13’W & 39°58’N, as well as, over the Rockpiles near 72°45’W & 40°08’N and 72°53’W & 40°04’N. Although the fishing action is expected to remain slow and scattered offshore of New Jersey, increased chances for action is likely over the 20 fathom curve near 73°30’W & 39°41’N, over the Triple Wrecks near 73°02’W & 39°32’N, and south over 30 fathoms near 73°23’W & 39°11’N.

If you are fishing offshore in the Hudson Canyon, your better chances for action will occur along the northern edge of the blue 79.1°F water as it continues to push eastward over the 500 fathom tip where favorable conditions have remained for the past 6 days near 72°12’W & 39°25’N. A bit further offshore, the northern edge of the blue 81.3°F water is also likely to provide action where favorable conditions have remained for the past 2-3 days from over the 100 fathom curve near 72°29’W & 39°15’N eastward to over 500 fathoms near 72°10’W & 39°16’N and over the 1000 fathom curve near 71°58’W & 39°17’N.
