ROFFS FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS
FOR THE WILMINGTON CANYON TO NORFOLK CANYON AREAS (LAT./LONG.)
SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE***SAMPLE**
Based on a multiple factor analysis, the symbols (hot spot spots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action is expected to be better compared with other (non-marked) areas. These are not based on dock rumors or hearsay fishing reports. Fishing reports are stated as such. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map,  search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur. Arrows indicate the main current direction. Numbers inside of the dots indicate the number of consecutive days that we have seen favorable conditions in that location.

We are able to observe the ocean conditions in this area relatively clearly today using imagery from this morning and this afternoon. Overall, we continue to observe a large clockwise eddy, currently centered over the 1000 fathom curve of Washington Canyon near 74°00’W & 37°15’N, that is pulling a large finger of blue 68.6°F-69.6°F water northward and inshore over the 50-500 fathom curves of the Norfolk and Washington Canyons before turning back offshore between Washington and Poor Mans Canyons. This finger of blue 68.6°F-69.6°F water is expected to provide your best overall chances for fishing action with a combination of tuna, shark and perhaps marlin action where it occurs over good bottom, especially where favorable conditions have remained for multiple days. As you continue northward into Poor Mans Canyon and Baltimore Canyons, the offshore motion of the water, due to the clockwise rotational pull of the eddy, suggests slow and scattered fishing action will occur. Additionally, the ocean conditions in Wilmington Canyon appears to be declining as filaments of blue 66.7°F-67.6°F water are also getting pulled in an offshore direction. However, we are able to observe different locations along the 500 and 1000 fathom curves in each of these canyons that have favorable, but different, conditions for multiple days improving your chances for fishing action.

With this in mind, the ocean conditions in Washington Canyon suggest good chances for fishing action with tuna, sharks and perhaps marlin will occur along the inshore edge of the blue 68.6°F water as it gets pulled inshore and northward along the 100 fathom curve where we have recieved reports of good tuna action and where favorable conditions have remianed stable for up to six days near 74°30’W & 37°22’N, 74°30’W & 37°30’N, 74°20’W & 37°33’N and over the 500 fathom curve near 74°13’W & 37°35’N. If you find the fishing action slow inshore, we suggest you continue offshore and fish the warmer to cooler 69.6°F-68.6°F inshore edge of the eddy where it lies over the 500 fathom curve from Norfolk Canyon near 74°28’W & 37°08’N northward to near 74°23’W & 37°20’N to over the 74°13’W & 37°30’N. Additional chances for fishing action in Norfolk Canyon will occur where favorable conditions occur in 50 fathom depths near 74°38’W & 37°08’N and 74°13’W & 37°06’N, as well as, offshore over 1000 fathoms where favorable conditions also occur from near 74°20’W & 37°02’N northward to near 74°16’W & 37°09’N.

The offshore motion of the water in Poor Mans Canyon suggest slow and scattered fishing action will occur. However, we are able to observe a pool of blue 67.6°F water that has remained stable over the 500 fathom and 1000 fathom curves near 73°55’W & 37°46’N and 37°42’W & 37°47’N for the past four days providing chances for action with tuna and sharks. Closer inshore, favorable condition for action have also remained stable for 4-5 days over good bottom of the Lobster Claw near 74°34’W & 37°43’N, and over the 40-50 fathom curve near 74°20’W & 37°43’N. The blending and unstable ocean conditions in Wilmington and Baltimore Canyons suggest slow and scattered fishing action may occur. However, the presence of blue 65.7°F water over the 500 fathom curve for up to 5 days will provide increased chances for action in Wilmington Canyon near 73°34’W & 38°15’N, and in Baltimore Canyon near 73°43’W & 38°00’N and 73°50’W & 37°59’N. Further offshore, good chances for action may also occur where favorable conditions have remained for 4 days over the 1000 fathom curve between both canyons near 73°28’W & 38°03’N and 73°29’W & 38°00’N. On your way out to the blue 65.7°F water, increased chances for action may occur over the 100 fathom curve (500 fathom tip) of Wilmington Canyon near 73°30’W & 38°22’N and 73°34’W & 38°22’N, and inshore of Baltimore Canyon where favorable conditions exist over 50 fathoms near 73°59’W & 38°10’N and 74°08’W & 38°00’N. Closer inshore, good chances for tuna and shark action is also expected to occur where favorable conditions have remained stable for up to four days over the Hot Dog Lumps near 74°24’W & 38°04’N and 74°29’W & 38°03’N, as well as, over the Elephant’s Trunk near 74°04’W & 38°27’N.
