FOR THE HUDSON CANYON TO BALTIMORE CANYON OFFSHORE
UPDATED ON MONDAY 05 MAY 2014 FOR MONDAY P.M. & TUESDAY FISHING ONLY
Based on a multiple factor analysis, the symbols (hot spot dots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action are expected to be better compared with other (nonmarked) areas. These are not based on dock rumors or hearsay fishing reports. Fishing reports are stated as such. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map, search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur. Arrows indicate the main current direction. Numbers inside of the dots indicate the number of consecutive days that we have seen favorable conditions in that location. (1 fathom equals approximately 6 feet.) Noon to Afternoon SST may be 1°F or greater than the morning calibrated SST on the analysis charts.
We were able to see this area clearly today to increase your chances for mainly tuna (bluefin, bigeye and yellowfin tuna), sharks and swordfish action. Overall, there is a large clockwise rotation eddy east of Hudson Canyon containing 65.5°F to 67.1°F to 69.0°F water and also pulling this bluer mixed Gulf Stream water into the 1000 fathom ledges east of Toms Canyon and into the 500-1000 fathom ledges of Hudson Canyon as we expect the conditions to improve for fishing action as this eddy pushes warmer 65.0°F to 69.0°F water farther into Hudson Canyon to Toms Canyon later this week. There is another clockwise rotating eddy centered offshore of Spencer Canyon (near 73°00’W & 38°30’N) pulling warmer 63.0°F to 65.0°F to 65.5°F water into Spencer Canyon southwest over the 100-500 fathom ledges toward Wilmington Canyon for favorable fishing action. Farther south there is a clockwise rotating eddy well offshore and east-southeast of Baltimore Canyon pulling some bluer-green 65.5° water toward the 1250-1500 fathom ledges. Farther southwest there appears to be a clockwise rotating system offshore of Poor Mans Canyon pulling and holding some warmer yet blue-green 62.0°F to 65.5°F water over the 100-1000 fathom ledges from south of Baltimore Canyon to Poor Mans Canyon and moving down the bank southwest toward Washington Canyon where there is mixed Gulf Stream bluer 64.0°F to 65.5°F water over the 1000 fathom ledges east of Washington Canyon toward the 1000 fathom ledges for Norfolk Canyon for favorable fishing action. There have been reports of bluefin tuna and plenty of life within the 62.0°F to 65.5°F water south of Baltimore Canyon to Poor Mans Canyon. Bottom Line is once there is a window of a day or two of good weather there are several options for good fishing action offshore for tuna and you will want to be ready and have your boat in the water ready to go offshore.
The more favorable conditions for tuna, swordfish and sharks will occur along the strong 50.0°F to 65.5°F/67.1°F green to bluer-green water mass boundary that runs from Jones Valley where it has been favorable for two days (71°55-58’W & 39°26-29’N) across the 500 fathom mouth of Hudson Canyon (near 72°04-07’W & 39°18-20-22’N) extending southwest along the 250-500 fathom ledges toward Toms Canyon (near 72°15-17’W & 39°10-15’N). Also if you can fish farther offshore good conditions occur along the green to blue 50.0°F to 65.5°F to 67.1°F to 69.0°F water mass boundary favorable for two days well east of Toms to Carteret and Lindenkohl Canyons from the Dump Site south to 1300-1500 fathom ledges.
There are also favorable conditions for fishing action in Spencer Canyon south-southwest toward Wilmington Canyon where the warmer water is pushing in a favorable inshore direction where you locate the warmer filaments of 63.0°F to 64.0°F to 65.2°F to 65.5°F water and where it has been favorable for two days. These relatively better conditions for fishing action start from the 70-100 fathom ledges of Spencer Canyon and just northeast of Spencer Canyon near 73°05-10’W & 38°40’N and extending south-southwest along the 100-250-500 fathom ledges near 73°11-12’W & 38°33-37’N to the 500 fathom ledges east of Wilmington Canyon near 73°18-20’W & 38°22-27’N.
Favorable conditions continue south along the strong 50.0°F to 56.0°F to 62.0°F water mass boundary east and northeast of Poor Mans Canyon over the 100-200 fathom ledges favorable for at least two days near 74°00’W & 37°50-55’N but conditions may be better farther offshore over the 600-750 fathom range where you find the warmer 64.0°F to 65.5°F water edges and where it has been favorable for two days near 73°51’W & 37°50’N extending southwest well east of the Rockpiles along this same 56.0°F to 65.5°F water mass boundary favorable for two days over the 500 fathom lumps near 73°55-59’W & 37°41-44’N to near 74°02-03’W & 37°33-34’N.
