ROFFS Fisheries Oceanographic Analysis for the Ecuador area
Updated on Oct. 15-18, 2001 using data from the last 3 days.

Based on a 20 factor statistical analysis, the black dots (hot spots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action is expected to be better compared with other (non-marked) areas. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map, search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur.

Central America and Columbia: We are able to observe the northern edge of a large pool of blue 25.1°C 25.4°C water that has formed a strong 25.1°/26.5°C temperature boundary zone south of Costa Rica and Panama creating favorable conditions for fishing action with tuna, swordfish, dolphin, and marlin. Additional chances for fishing action will occur over the good bottom of the seamounts west of Columbia in the Gulf of Panama.

Ecuador and Peru:
Overall, we are able to observe the equatorial wave clearly today. The majority of your chances for finding high concentrations of fish will occur within the mixing zone of the equatorial wave as it moves in a western direction towards the Galapagos Islands between 0°00 to 3°00'S. In this zone, the warmer blue water of the wave (23°C-25°C) forms strong water mass boundary zones with the cooler greener upwelled waters moving northward from Peru and Chile (20°C-22°C).

Galapagos and Offshore:
Currently, the primary wave feature in the area is located offshore of the Galapagos Islands between 95°00'W and 100°00'W . This suggests that you should concentrate your fishing efforts ahead of the eqatorial wave from near 96°00'W to 101°00'W and between 2°00'N and 1°00'S and allow the warmer 22.5°C-24.9°C water to come to your boats.
